About InternetExcerpts.com

You are here: /about

This website is used to track excerpts from around the internet. While everyone already agreed not to do this, it is still going on and preferred to be done by specific websites or webmasters. Normally, there is a similarity in the content being excerpted and it is thought to be done for school or work.

At school, things should be referenced rather than excerpted. If an excerpt is a requirement for archival or historical reasons there are some things to keep in mind.

  • The person or organization having their content excerpted should consent or provide permission. Publishing on the internet is not considered to be a valid agreement for excerpting content.
  • The person should also have a separate agreement with an archival organization, university, or business. This may mean they get a copy of all the excerpted content for use by their organization and this may not be agreeable with students or workers without additional pay or some type of economic agreement.

A tip for school is to include inline images for original work in a paper and to use Appendices for excerpted content. The inline citation would then reference the appendix which might have additional information about the source of the excerpt.

Appendices can also be used for original work that has more detail, requires a larger image or full page, or that is broken down into multiple pages. Its recommended to include original works first in the appendix followed by excerpts.

The website wont excerpt anything in particular, it will vary throughout the years and may go dormant from time to time. There will be an effort to excerpt the most permissible license to this website, and the excerpt number can be referenced here instead.

Some excerpts will be licensed, this does not grant a reciprocal license to the person viewing or reading the excerpt. The page can still be referenced, if enough information is provided, it may be possible to license the content through their regular licensing process.

Keep in mind that license terms can change and this does not count as discrimination. For example, someone may agree to license content under certain terms for a period of 6 months. They would not be required to license content under those same terms after that 6 month period has passed.

There will be some basic information on licensing information, openly available resources, attribution, and actual agreements. Try not to read into things or imply certain information. The comments will be brief but straight forward. Keep in mind this normally falls under legal services.

The goal is to provide an excerpt of the most permissible license, a source, and a reference location. Keep in mind open resources can sometimes be time sensitive or may require enrollment in a program or to work in certain workplaces.

There will likely be a blog to answer questions and to demonstrate the current use of excerpted content. Most licensing agreements do not require attribution, they are different than open resources however which still have some terms associated with the excerpt.
